Compressor Acting Up? Two Clues from Bently Nevada 3500/72M and 3500/77M
Compressor Acting Up? Two Clues from Bently Nevada 3500/72M and 3500/77M Oct. 17, 2026

FIELD NOTE: RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS An alarm is the start of the story. Rod movement and cylinder pressure offer two different ways to investigate what changed. 3500/72MTHE MECHANICAL CLUE Piston rod position and movement 3500/77MTHE PRESSURE CLUE Cylinder pressure during compression A compressor rarely hands the maintenance team a neat explanation. The clues tend to arrive separately: a trend that has drifted from normal, a higher discharge temperature, or less capacity than the process expects. Before anyone reaches for a parts list, there is a better first question: which measurement changed, and under what operating conditions? Two different measurements can bring some order to that conversation. The Bently Nevada 3500/72M Recip Rod Position Monitor follows the movement of the piston rod. The 3500/77M Recip Cylinder Pressure Monitor follows pressure behavior during compression. One gives engineers a closer look at mechanical movement. The other shows how the cylinder is working with the gas. The value comes from putting the signals on the same timeline. Neither reading names a failed part on its own, but together with a sound baseline they can turn a vague "compressor problem" into a focused inspection. 3500/72MFollow the Rod The piston rod moves through the pressure packing case on every stroke. A proximity probe can observe its position without touching it, and the four-channel 3500/72M processes those signals into measurements used for rod position and rod drop monitoring. The monitor can compare configured measurements with alarm setpoints, giving operators a warning when behavior moves outside the expected range. CHECK THE TREND Was the shift gradual or sudden? Does it appear only at a certain load? Did it start after a shutdown, probe adjustment, or repair? Reading rod drop: It may indicate rider band wear, but it does not measure band thickness directly. Interpret it using the reference condition, machine geometry, and probe arrangement. A rising rod drop trend calls for investigation before anyone declares a component worn. Rod position adds another clue: whether the rod moves differently from its established pattern. If peak-to-peak displacement increases, compare the trend with vibration, operating conditions, and inspection history. Ask what changed in the rod's behavior and when it began. 3500/77MRead the Pressure Sometimes the concern is less obvious at the rod. The compressor may continue running, yet its capacity or pressure behavior no longer looks right. Cylinder pressure data can help the team investigate that side of the machine. The 3500/77M processes signals from approved pressure transducers. Depending on installation and configuration, it provides suction pressure, discharge pressure, maximum and minimum pressure, and compression ratio. It can also calculate selected rod load and rod reversal variables using configured mechanical information. These measurements should always be interpreted against the compressor's ope...

ABB ACS880 Drive Project Update: ACS880-31-045A-3 vs. ACS880-34-246A-3
ABB ACS880 Drive Project Update: ACS880-31-045A-3 vs. ACS880-34-246A-3 Oct. 17, 2026

A technical comparison of ABB ACS880-31-045A-3 and ACS880-34-246A-3, covering ultra-low harmonic architecture, regenerative operation, duty ratings, cabinet integration, cooling and RFQ verification. ABB ACS880 | Drive Selection Brief From 22 kW Wall-Mounted Control to a 132 kW Cabinet Module: Two ACS880 Drives, Two Very Different Projects ABB's latest steel-industry project shows the breadth of the ACS880 platform. This engineering guide turns that platform story into a practical comparison of ACS880-31-045A-3 and ACS880-34-246A-3. News reference: ABB steel-mill drive project, September 17, 2026 Models: ACS880-31-045A-3 + ACS880-34-246A-3 Audience: Engineers, MRO and procurement teams The two products share an ACS880 name and active-front-end technology, but they are not interchangeable. ACS880-31-045A-3 is a 22 kW wall-mounted ultra-low harmonic single drive. ACS880-34-246A-3 is a 132 kW R11 drive module that requires engineered cabinet integration, substantially greater cooling and project-specific main-circuit design. 01 | News to Engineering Context What ABB's steel-mill project tells drive buyers The announcement is useful as platform context, but it does not identify either SalesPLCAuto model as a project BOM item. High-dynamic machinery needs more than a power match ABB's UK steel-mill project covers a new coil box and crop shear. These machines operate under high temperature and rapidly changing mechanical loads, so the drive solution must coordinate acceleration, deceleration, torque response and production-line timing. The announced scope includes ACS880 liquid-cooled multidrive cabinets and modules, ACS880 single drives and low-voltage AC induction motors. ABB expects the project to commence in the second half of 2027. Read the official ABB project announcement → Editorial boundary ABB does not publish the complete ordering codes used in the project. Neither ACS880-31-045A-3 nor ACS880-34-246A-3 should be described as confirmed steel-mill project hardware. They are concrete catalog examples used to explain how different ACS880 architectures serve different engineering requirements. 02 | Interactive Model Desk Select a model, then test its duty rating Switch between the two exact models. The duty selector shows why a single headline kilowatt value is not enough for drive selection. ACS880-31-045A-3 22 kW wall-mounted ultra-low harmonic single drive ACS880-34-246A-3 132 kW R11 ultra-low harmonic drive module A self-contained drive for individual equipment ACS880-31-045A-3 is a 400 V-class wall-mounted single drive. Its active-front-end architecture is intended to reduce input-current distortion, improve power factor and support bidirectional energy flow when the system design permits regeneration. Its comparatively complete package suits individual machines where a standalone drive is preferred over a custom cabinet module. ABB System 800xA 7.0 Meets the Installed Base: What PM860K01 Users Should Check Before Modernizing
ABB System 800xA 7.0 Meets the Installed Base: What PM860K01 Users Should Check Before Modernizing Oct. 10, 2026

ABB INSTALLED-BASE NEWS · AC 800M MODERNIZATION System 800xA 7.0 Meets the Installed Base ABB’s System 800xA 7.0 announcement creates a practical planning question for plants still operating proven AC 800M controller assets: what must be verified before an installed PM860K01 3BSE018100R1 becomes part of a modernization project? Author: Frida Reviewed: October 10, 2026 Focus: Installed-base identification FEATURED CONTROLLER PM860K01 3BSE018100R1 Open verified product page ↗ 01 THE MODERNIZATION QUESTION A New DCS Release Does Not Remove Installed-Hardware Reality Continuity must start with identity ABB introduced System 800xA 7.0 in February 2026 as part of its Automation Extended strategy. The release emphasizes continuity while adding a path toward newer automation capabilities. For an operating plant, however, a platform announcement does not convert an existing controller cabinet into a generic migration package. The installed processor, base plate, communications, application backup and project engineering baseline still define the starting point. The ABB PM860K01 3BSE018100R1 is an AC 800M processor unit kit built around the PM860 processor and TP830 base plate. The PM860 uses a 48 MHz MPC860 processor, 8 MB SDRAM and 2 MB flash PROM, with a nominal 24 V DC supply at the base plate. These values identify the installed component; they are not, by themselves, proof that a different processor can be inserted without engineering work.
